Last Thursday we tried out the PHD Cleanse – It’s a 3 day juice cleanse. You drink 6 juices per day, no eating allowed and keep the Food Channel turned off, it’s torture.
If the PHD Cleanse or just a juice cleanse in general is something you have thought about doing then read on to get a little insight into how we went.
Last Wednesday I began the PHD 3 day juice cleanse. I wanted to do this cleanse to help improve my skin and energy levels.
There are two cleanses to choose from, the Basic Cleanse and the Advanced Cleanse. I chose the Advanced Cleanse as I have tried a few different juice cleanses before and wanted to see what this would be like. This cleanse consists of 6 juices a day and 18 juices in total over three days. There are three different types of juices on the Advanced Cleanse.
The ‘green juice’ consists of cucumber, celery, kale lettuce, parsley, lemon, apple, cos lettuce and spinach. The ‘zesty lemonade juice’ consists of lemon, cayenne, agave nectar and ‘oxygen rich’ detoxification water. The ‘white juice’ also known as the desert juice consists of Cashew nuts, vanilla, agave nectar, cinnamon and ‘oxygen rich’ detoxification water.
I found the first day of the cleanse to be fairly easy considering I didn’t have my daily coffee which usually leaves me feeling irritated. My energy levels were high and I didn’t feel tired and fatigued in the afternoon, which can sometimes happen. Because I was getting hungry I was trying to drink a lot of water throughout the day, this also helps with flushing toxins out of the body.
The second day I woke up clear-headed and wasn’t hungry which was surprising as I hadn’t eaten the previous day. I had my green juice as soon as I woke up along with a herbal tea which made me feel full. At 2pm I began to get quite a bad headache, which can be a common side effect from juice cleanses. After about two hours my headache had gone and I felt a lot better. I drank nearly three litres of water to help my body expel toxins. Because I was feeling hungry in the evening I went to bed at 8pm, which is early for me. This stopped me from eating food and let my body rest.
The third day was really hard as I had to work instead of Uni and I got extremely hungry. I drank three herbal teas and two litres of water to help me feel full. I didn’t get any headaches today, which was great. When I got home from work I went straight to bed as I felt exhausted and a little bit weak.
After completing the three-day juice cleanse I noticed that my skin had improved, it was clear and felt a lot softer than it was before. When I woke up the next day I felt like I had a lot more energy and felt clear-headed in the morning. I did find it quite hard after three days and wouldn’t have done it any longer then that. I weighed myself and I had lost 1.2kgs over three days. I usually drink one cup of coffee every morning and went three days without it, so I feel like now I can easily go without which is great as I have been wanting to cut this out of my diet.
I would highly recommend trying a juice cleanse even if it is just for one day. Some benefits of juice cleanses are:
Improved energy levels
Better overall mood
Healthier hair, skin and nails
Improved focus and mental clarity
Stronger Immune System
Last Thursday I started the PHD cleanse with Libby. It was something I was excited about doing as in the past I’ve done juice cleanses and always found them to be beneficial for my energy levels and skin. On the Tuesday that week I found out that I had to get all 4 wisdom teeth out but didn’t let that stop me from doing the cleanse as after you get your wisdom teeth out you can’t eat solid’s so if you’re on a liquid diet what a better way than a juice cleanse? Green juice is far more nutritious than ice cream and jelly.
We chose the Advanced Cleanse – 4 green juices, 1 lemon based juice and another cashew milk juice per day. The green juice was by far my favorite, you can really taste the cucumber (others say the celery), lemon juice also easy to drink and if you have a sweet tooth you’ll be a fan of the cashew milk drink.
Day 1 I found easy – after all I had just had surgery so my appetite wasn’t at an all time high.
Day 2 is always the hardest for me when doing a cleanse. I found myself day dreaming about pasta and cake. Towards the end of the day I got quite hungry so made sure that I was drinking water in between juices and had an early night to let my body rest.
Day 3 my appetite had gone. I didn’t crave food or have hunger pains. I could have kept going and done the juice cleanse for a few more days.
After the 3 days my energy levels were definitely better and considering I had surgery I felt fine. My skin was also clear and the whites of my eyes brighter. As for weight loss I lost 1.5kgs, this would have been due to the fact that I wasn’t consuming solid food. A few people had asked me “how much weight did you lose” – I didn’t do this cleanse as a quick fix for weight loss, you aren’t going to lose lots of weight by only drinking juice for 3 days. This cleanse was more about giving my insides a spring clean and letting my digestive system have a rest. It works so hard, we eat from 7 in the morning till 7 at night and even after then our digestive system is working trying to break everything down so to be able to give it 3 days rest is very beneficial.
If you are wanting to make a change in your diet then I would definitely suggest the PHD cleanse. It is a kick-start to weight loss and makes you feel great about yourself. Like they have stated on their website “use your PHD Cleanse experiment as a stepping stone to change”. After the cleanse has finished you know how good your insides are feeling so it gives you the motivation to eat healthy and think before you put anything in your mouth.
It really is mind over matter. The best thing to do is to keep yourself busy and make sure that people around you are supporting you in your efforts. If you get a headache that’s perfectly normal. If you can do the juice cleanse with someone you know then you can help each other through. Doing the cleanse during the week when you are working is also something I would recommend as you are busy and don’t have time to sit around and think about what you could possibly be eating instead of drinking juice.
We love the convenience factor of the PHD Cleanse, everything is done for you and it’s delivered to your door. No fuss and no hassle. Right now the PHD Cleanse are only delivering to Auckland (we’ve heard work that they are going Nationwide soon) however there is so much information on the internet in how you can do your own home cleanse. All you need is a juicer, a bit of time and lots of vegetables. If you are based in Australia there are two juice cleanse companies that deliver. Urban Remedy and Lucky You.
If you have any questions about juice cleansing let us know we would be more than happy to help out.
